Cedar Rapids Imposes Moratorium on New Billboards and Digital Signs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The City Council on Friday unanimously imposed a six-month moratorium on permit requests for new billboards and digital signs.

The council has been talking about changing rules related to billboards and digital signs for months, so much so that sign companies have been hustling to file requests for new signs before any changes.

As a result, the City Planning Commission in recent weeks called for a billboard moratorium, and the council’s Development Committee and now the full council have agreed to put it in place.

City Council member Kris Gulick on Friday said the council has asked the city’s Department of Community Development to help the council get new rules in place within 120 days. The department will be meeting with sign companies and others in upcoming weeks to discuss sign density, sign locations and other matters.
