IOWA CITY, Iowa - An afternoon car fire blew smoke across the far northeast side of downtown Iowa City Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters were first called to the Iowa Avenue parking garage at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Bystanders along Iowa Avenue could see smoke blowing from the garage to the north, giving the appearance that the building was on fire.

Firefighters located the source of the fire on the third level of the garage. At least one vehicle was badly damaged and still smoking as of 2:30 p.m.. Several fire trucks and police cars shut down Iowa Ave. so that firefighters could get water from nearby hydrants into the garage.

It's not clear what caused the parked car to start on fire. There was no noticeable damage to the building.
