Arrest Made in 1999 Murder Investigation

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - An arrest has been made in a 14-year-old Cedar Rapids murder case.

According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, police in Shakopee, Minn. have arrested 34-year-old Deshaun L. Phillips in the 1999 murder of 44-year-old Judith Weeks.

Police said on April 5, 1999, Weeks’ body was found behind 1319 Second Ave. SE. Weeks died from multiple injuries, police said.

There was insufficient evidence to file charges at the time of the murder, police said. Police have not said what led to a breakthrough in the case and have said they will not be releasing any additional information on the case.

According to a police department press release, the case has been reviewed numerous times since the original investigation. Recently, investigators were assigned to the case and were successful in developing new information on Phillips.

First-degree murder is a class A felony, punishable by a mandatory life sentence.
