There's no doubt that autumn in eastern Iowa is a beautiful time of year. Take advantage of the cool, crisp weather and visit one of the many attractions in our area.

Peace United Church of Christ of Elkader will host its Fall Festival Sunday, September 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a meal, country store, gift baskets, bake sale, and raffle. The meal will feature sliced pork and sliced turkey. First prize for the raffle is two tickets to the Iowa vs Minnesota Football Game with lodging and meals.

Osborne Heritage Days - October 13 & 14, 10-4
Events are held in the Pioneer Village of the Osborne Center, located 5 miles south of Elkader on Highway 13. For more information, phone (563) 245-1516.  Heritage Days recreates some of the crafts, skills and lifestyles of the early pioneers.  Visitors travel back in time to experience many of the sights, sounds, smells and activities of long ago.  Over 50 demonstrations are featured, including blacksmithing, woodcrafts, spinning, basketry, soap making, pottery and many others.  Native American style crafts, including beadwork and flint knapping, will also be demonstrated. any pioneer-era foods are featured at Heritage Days as well.  Treats include fry bread, Norwegian lefse, kettle corn, and homemade root beer.  Samples of fresh apple cider and buffalo stew are also given out during the weekend.  A Farmer's Market features pumpkins, apples, honey, maple syrup, sorghum, dried flowers, herbs, horseradish and much more.

Free Fall Fun Day at Peck's Flower Shop and Garden Center on Blairs Ferry and Edgewood Road N.E. in Cedar Rapids. Co-hosted by Mix 96.5. Bring the kids to Peck's to "trick-a-tree"! Indian Creek Nature Center - Programs for toddlers and preschoolers at Nature Center
The Indian Creek Nature will hold three programs this fall for very young children and their parents or adult guardian.
COLORS, SHAPES AND SOUNDS will be held from 9:30-10:30 on Tuesday, October 9th for preschoolers and parents. Under the direction of a naturalist the children and parents will listen to animal calls, search for colors, and take a nature scavenger hunt walk.  TURKEY TALK will be featured on Tuesday, November 13 from 9:30-10:30 for preschoolers and parents. Children and parents will listen to the sounds of turkeys and make a turkey craft. TODDLER TRACKS Tall Trees and Falling Leaves is for children from 18-36 months old and a parent or guardian.  It will be held from 10 a.m. until Noon on Saturday, October 27th. The group will explore the changing seasons and make music with seeds, find leaf colors and learn which animals live in the forest. Take Highway 61 1 mile South of Wapello. Turn West on 65th St. and go 2 miles. Turn South on L Ave. and go 1/2 mile. It is located in an abandoned farm house. The last local haunted house was held in 1999. It was a very successful annual event in the past drawing people from all over Eastern Iowa but was discontinued due to dissolution of local Jaycees chapter. With the help of some former members the Wapello Fire Department has resurrected the event to raise funds for their service. It should be a pretty good haunted house and the money goes to a good cause. 2006 Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

The Melon Shed will be hosting an Indian corn walk thru, along with a pint-size maize, museum of Halloween Art, tractor-hay rides ($1.00), animals to pet, locally grown apples sweet potatoes, manys kinds of squash pumpkins and decorative gourds,straw bales (large and small),corn shocks.
