Two UI Football Players Charged

From the University of Iowa

By Becky Ogann

IOWA CITY - The University of Iowa Police Department, in concert with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, has obtained warrants for the arrest of Cedric D Everson III for Sexual Abuse in the Second Degree and Abeberell "Abe" Bradford Satterfield for Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree and Sexual Abuse in the Second Degree. The arrest warrants are for incidents that occurred on Oct. 14, 2007 on the UI campus in Iowa City, Iowa. The Johnson County Attorney has authorized extradition from out of state for these warrants.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa City Police Department and the Johnson County Attorney's Office assisted the UI Police Department in the investigation.

Everson and Satterfield no longer live in Iowa City. The victim no longer resides in Iowa City.

The UI became aware of the incident on Oct. 14, 2007. The victim later contacted law enforcement and a criminal investigation began in November 2007. The investigation continued into 2008.

The Johnson County Attorney's Office said Tuesday that the safety and wellbeing of the reported victim was paramount in the decision about when to file the charges.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Director of Athletics Gary Barta said, "This has been a difficult situation for everyone involved. From the day we learned about the incident, I have been deeply concerned and we have taken it seriously.

"Our first concern was for the young woman. As part of the process, all staff involved worked to follow university procedures and protocol. I am very confident that happened. Last fall, everything was turned over to the proper authorities in full cooperation of the legal process.

"I look forward to being able to explain the handling of this matter more completely in the near future."

Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz said, "This situation has always been serious and significant. I am concerned for everyone involved.

"Abe and Cedric left the football program last fall after several meetings with me. Because this is still a legal matter and the information is sensitive, I cannot discuss the specifics of those conversations at this time.

"From the beginning, I have worked directly with Gary Barta and University officials to make certain that procedures and protocol were followed."

I am so proud of this young lady for speaking up and fighting for justice. As a mother of both girls and boys who will be heading off to college soon, I am afraid of the dangers my children may face. Hopefully some of us have learned something from this young lady. Thanks for fighting back!

the case against these two students is cut and dry. Its the obvious obstruction charges against the university officials that covered it up, and a civil suit from the victim's family seem necessary too.

The "6:00 PM Anonymous" pig must be a real catch for a woman. did you know the law says "no" means "no" ? Just because a girl is drunk doesn't allow a man to rape her. You better just stay in your mancave and leave civilation to us civilized people. I agree with the comment that you need to have some daughters of your own to worry about. But I guess that if they were to be raped it would be their own fault as well. And I agree that "thugs" is the perfect term to describe these deadbeats.

It's a really bad idea to assume you know what happened in this situation. Girl gets drunk & makes bad decisions? Shame on you. May you never have daughters.

Why did it take 7 months to release the names. Protect the victim?? they should of thought of that when the recruited these types. You lower your standards this is the results. You getting the Other schools "leftovers" Of course I'm sure were picking on them just ask any of them. Why can they not follow the laws? Why did johnson county allow then to leave the state, now we have to pay to bring them back, and keep the in jail - Take it out of the Coach's salary, our overpaid bonuses.

Maybe these guys would like to pay off my student loans from Iowa!! I worked hard for my education there and nothing was more infuriating than to see losers like this be enrolled in the same classes as I was (my Gen Eds anyway... didn't see to many of them in Organic Chemistry!) and not appreciate one minute of their FREE education! Kudos to those student-athletes that realize and APRECIATE why they're at UI! Good for you!

All you people seem to be concerned with is weather thug is a rasist word. What about all the young girls and boys who are being sexually assulted in our country today. Our country needs to return to the basics that we started with the Bible. Parents need to return to the basics of raising a child. Teach trust, faith, & love and maybe American can stand tall and safe again.. God bless the girl for being brave enough to take a stand to get these two off the streets.

I do know the definition of a thug, there is no color involved. It seems, when ever somebody does something illegal, and are caught, the racist card gets broguht up. I hope the football team can rise above the last few years of bad publicity. Go Iowa! Please find some decent athletic boys to play this year!

Maybe we should stay out of the surrounding states and concentrate on athletes from Iowa not that they are all perfect but would have more of a reputation to uphold. I think anyone guilty of sexual abuse should serve due time whether they are white or black and believe me the white do it just as much as the black.

gotta love it when girls get drunk, make bad decisions, then try to pull the rape card...didn't this happen at Duke with their lacrosse team? too bad those girls are still settling lawsuits with the players for taking away their season and naming them as rapists. not saying that happened here...but it's bs.

Before any college recruits athletes for their teams I would strongly suggest looking into their background for any kind of trouble they may have gotten into in the past. Sure doesn't look like this has been happening.

why is thug racist. To me it refers to criminals.

Tuesday, May 27 at 3:52 PM Sticks N Stones wrote ...

How is the word "thug" racist? It does not imply anything about race... unless you are assuming that all "thugs" come from a particular racial or ethnic group? The article kindly points out that the suspects have been accused, but not yet convicted of anything, so this name-calling is a bit premature. They MAY be dangerous, or they may be as innocent as choir boys.

Tuesday, May 27 at 3:51 PM hokfan wrote ...

Thug = racist???? Since when.... some people are unbelievable. Maybe you're the racist. These guys are THUGS.... white or black, short or tall, skinny or fat. .... they are thug, criminal, losers. That seems to be all our wonderful Kapt. Kirk can recruit anymore.

Tuesday, May 27 at 3:51 PM Big Daddy wrote ...

It is not a racial issue. Black, white, green or red a thug is a thug.

Tuesday, May 27 at 3:40 PM Anonymous wrote ...

Nope, I think THUGS is the perfect word to use to describe the kind of athelets they are recruiting. Free education and they still manage to mess it up.

Tuesday, May 27 at 3:35 PM Definition of "thug" wrote ...

The word "thug" (like any other word) is only racist if you interpret it to be. The actual definition is "a tough and violent man, esp. a criminal." This does not imply any race, only gender. America needs to stop being so sensitive and looking for racism where none is intended.

Tuesday, May 27 at 3:05 PM Big Daddy wrote ...

Another proud day for the Iowa Football Team. When you recruit thugs with no morals, this is what you get.

Tuesday, May 27 at 2:17 PM Anonymous wrote ...

Tuesday, May 27 at 2:06 PM "thugs"? wrote ...

first of all i don't believe that "thug" is the right word, it's a lil racist to me maybe you should chose a better choice of words.

Tuesday, May 27 at 2:01 PM Anonymous wrote ...

Yep, Kirk is a stand up guy. He deserves another cool million for ridding the program of these thugs.

Tuesday, May 27 at 1:40 PM Anonymous wrote ...
