Community Honors "Regular Joe"

ANAMOSA - Bob Bierer says in his eyes he's not a hero and doesn't deserve much attention.

But you get a different answer when you ask Holly Winders about saving her family from an overturned car, underwater in Buffalo Creek. Phil Horak was driving a car when he swerved to miss an animal and went into the creek, with Winders and their four kids all together in the car.

"And I'm so thankful and thank God everyday that he reacted and did what he did. I owe him everything," said Winders.

Friday, the community recognized Bierer for risking his life by jumping into the creek in and pulling two of three trapped kids to safety. He was on the job as a part-time pizza delivery driver when he saw the crash.

Bierer said since then, people want to meet him, shake his hand, even hug him when he delivers a pizza.

"She goes 'We want you to deliver the pizza back here.' Then she sees who it is and she says, 'I just got to hug you,' she gave me a hug. It's been kinda crazy," said Bierer.

Bierer says he'd be fine without the attention, besides he's been there before. Bierer once saved a woman's life by holding her skull together on the interstate after she was in a bad crash.

He says what would make him feel good after this, isn't a medal.

"If I could inspire somebody to jump into action, just by jumping into action, that's the number one thing. Do what you have to do," said Bierer.

The family Bierer rescued has been in and out of the hospital since the crash, but the parents say they're getting better.

And both of Bierer's bosses at Paul Revere's Pizza and Reinhart Food Service told him to take as much time as he needed to rest up and get recognized.

It was nice for Bierer to get his medal but what about the law enforcement that actually went into the water and saved the little girl that was still in her car seat. There was nothing ever said about them and the out come of the little girl. I think that they should have gotten a medal for saving her. My heart goes out to the Law enforcement that saved her. Also a thank you to Bob Bierer.

This was very nice. But what about the two law enforcement officers that went in and got the remaining child still in the car while under the water? It took seven times going in and under the water into the car to finally reach the child and bring her out. Where are their Medals of Honor?
