I think he killed his family because he didn't want to face their disappointment in him as he went through the legal process and then when would be visiting him in prison. Also he might have imagined they'd be better off dead if he was dead.

I think that some of you are watching too much Law and Order etc. Where did you get the idea that drugs were involved? $500K is not a lot of money when it is spread out over several years and you have children. You shouldn't make things up about people when you don't know the facts.

I wish that Mr. Suepple could have gotten the help that he needed mentally to deal with everything that was going on. I imagine he wouldn't have done much time for the charges from Hill's Bank, although he was probably overwhelmed by the thought of going bankrupt. It is soo tragic that he chose to take his family with him. My thoughts and prayers go to their families.

well they know for sure that no drug lord killed the family and chased Steve into that fiery crash. They also know through dental records that he was the one inside the burnt van. Through a letter left and several voice mails left behind by Steven. Why we will never know but at least we can put to rest the conspiracy theories. My thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones involved. May the rest in peace.

Were they able to determine which direction the van was traveling when it crashed? Was it going towards Iowa City or away from it? Our thoughts & prayers go out to this family.

its seems odd that a father who everyone thought loved his children just out of the blue murdered his family...dont jump to conclusions just yet there might be more to this than people know

It's foolish to even think there was a "drug lord" or some such connection involved. It is obvious that Steve felt his family couldn't survive with him in prison; they would lose the house, certainly. He should have just manned up, done his time, and accepted responsibility. He called 911 at 6:31; crashed at 6:37, before the police even got to the residence. He drove into the pillar on purpose - maybe even loaded up the van with containers of gasoline so he would be sure it burned.

my heart goes out to the family .why did it have to happen to his family .they did nothing wrong so why punish them

My theory, husband had drug ties with some powerful connections. Due to the fact he was going to trial over imbezzeling over $500,000, his connections got worried that he was going to expose some other people, so they decided that it was easier to silence him. His family were just casualties of the situation. That is just my theory.

Everyone is so quick to judge. Just remember we aren't the only ones reading their families to can get this and how they must feel about reading the things that have been put on here. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and may God hold you all in palm of his hands to help heal your pain. God Bless!!!

All I know for sure is that a loving mother did not get the privilege to help her beautiful children get ready for school today. Hug your family tighter and give them your undivided attention. Show them that they are the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to you. I weep for the Mother's family and for the Sueppel family. I weep for the innoncent children who never got to grow up. God, please help everyone who knew them, and even the ones who didn't, to endure this overwhelming pain.

What a sad situation. Sounds like the guy might have faked his own death, and wanted to start over. I have to agree with other posters here who say that everything just doesn't add up yet. After the autopsies we will have a few more answers, but likely unless we ever find Steven Sueppel alive, we may never know. Still, my condolences to all families involved.

killed wife, children, but not himself? who called 911? someone did...someone called for help, who? car crashes and then bursts into flames? how often does that happen? why the crash? why the fire? crashing a car seems a strange way for a "shooter" to commit suicide. he used drugs, then stole money, got caught, no more money for drugs (or drug dealers) - jail sentence pending - deals could be made so dealers go to jail instead of him? dealers kill informers and their families, think it through...

Pray for the family members left behind-they need strength and compassion now; and trust that the Suepple family is now God's hands.

Murder suicide or unpaid drug debt ? Regardless, I hope the investigation reveals the truth of the tragic loss of life. My heart goes out to all Sueppel family and friends.

I am terribly saddened by this horrific tragedy. The pain that these two families will have to endure for the rest of their lives. They will never have any answers as why this has happened and will never understand how this could a=happen, but they still have to deal with all of the pain that their own loved one has caused. The two families are left with the aftermath of this horrific tragedy. Let's everyone pull together and help them through all of this. My hearts hurts for everyone.

I had tears in my eyes when I learned of this sad story. And wondered why a man whom had admitted to using cocaine was still allowed to live with these 'adopted' children. Wealth shouldn't make anyone above the law and he should have been being seen by a Psychiatrist to determine his safety to others. I pray for all in this tragedy.

It is possible that Mr. Sueppel who apparently made the 911 call could of been rushing home to save his family when the crash occured. something isn't adding up for me, but time will tell and i hope time will also heal the pain that family and friends are feeling. god bless

My heart too goes out to the Sueppel family. The loss they have suffered is great. Bless each of them. But, on another note, has anyone stopped to think about what pain Steve must have been in? He was sick. Somehow in his crazed mind I'm sure he thought he was relieving them of what they would suffer for the crimes he committed. He needed help and didn't ask for it. Please don't judge him. Pray for him. Pray for them all. It's all we can do.

Is it possible that we all are jumping to conculsions? Comments from people that knew this family say it was so unlike him and he loved his children very much. So lets not be so quick to judge before all the facts are in. My question is for the police,is it possible that someone he owed money to from the drug world came after him and his family and he was able to fled from the house which caused the accident and maybe his death as well Something here doesn't add up and leaves plenty of questions

I'm glad they're not just jumping to the conclusion that the guy in the van is him. I don't know much about the guy but it seems to me that if he managed to steal so much money from the bank, he must have been pretty clever.

I am totally sure he is on the lam right now. I bet they have the CIA and FBI working in shifts trying to locate him. Perhaps we should light the bat signal and get the real superheroes on the job. Why make excuses for this man?

TO the parent of the u of iowa student who said about a "shooter on the loose", that was never stated. The hawk alert, which I myself received as well, said there was an "active shooter" in the ic area. Then a second text a while later stated that there was no threat to u of i buildings, staff, and students.

Seems like a murder suicide. He knew he would eventually spend his life behind bars...but why on earth he felt he had to take his family with him is beyond me. Maybe he didn't want them to live with his shame? Whatever the reason it was wrong of him to play God and decide who should live and die. Fitting he die in flames...cause he is sure to spend eternity again there.

I am so thankful for the hawk alert . my daughter goes to u of iowa and called me the minute she got the text. however we were boh confused as to the message "shooter on the loose". she was not sure whether to go to class or not. i talked her out of it but she really didn't want to miss class . I say better safe than sorry these days. My prayers go with the extented family.
