IOWA CITY - One man sits in jail for his alleged role in an Iowa City murder case. Police needed about 24 hours to make the arrest. In the span of one day, police say they went from following up on an unattended death, to working a homicide investigation to making an arrest in Iowa City's second murder in four years.

Police arrested Curtis Fry, 21, of Wilton late Friday afternoon. They say he killed Jerome “Patrick” McEwen, 75. McEwen lived in an apartment at 513 South Van Buren Street in Iowa City. The medical examiner says McEwen had a fractured face and throat. Fry reportedly told a friend he hit a guy and thought the man was dying. Police say evidence all over the apartment points to Fry. They found a bloody pair of jeans and a jacket and even Fry's wallet. Iowa City Police Sergeant Troy Kelsay said, “When Curtis Fry was located by his brother he wasn't wearing his pants or his jacket, he was wearing two other jackets his brother did not recognize."

A neighbor of McEwen’s, who wished not to be named said, “It's a little edgy, but I can take care of myself. I can take care of myself."

Neighbors call McEwen peaceful and friendly, an affable character. Another neighbor says she often helped McEwen get up and down stairs. She says she liked talking to him.

Fry will hear the charge of second degree murder at his initial court appearance Saturday morning.

This is Iowa City's second murder in four years. In March 2004, the body of John Stewart, a transient, was discovered beneath the Gilbert Street Bridge.
