CEDAR RAPIDS - On Thursday afternoon the jury found Marin guilty of two counts of first degree murder. First degree murder carries a penalty under Iowa law of life in prison without the possibility for parole.
On Wednesday evening the prosecution and defense wrapped up their cases in the trial. The prosecution says Kyle Marin killed Katrina Hill and Molly Edmonson last April in Edmonson's Cedar Rapids apartment.
To be found guilty of first degree murder, the State needed to prove he stabbed the teens, that the teens died because of the stabbing, and that when he did it he had malice of forethought, which means that he meant to do it and that he had specific intent.
Wednesday morning, the judge started out with the requirements for first-degree murder.
In the defense’s closing argument, they reminded the jury not so much about the facts of the case, but about the context of those facts.
