Numerous Headstones Damaged in the Dysart Cemetery

DYSART, Iowa - Five times over the past five weeks, someone or a group of people have vandalized headstones at a Dysart cemetery. More than 65 headstones damaged since August 15th.
Last weekend, the vandals knocked over every other headstone in one section of the cemetery. Cemetery staff said they know it wasn't an accident or the wind. They are convinced it's at least two people working together to do the damage.
"They have no respect whatsoever of people that are buried here and it may be a relative. Those kids have no idea and if they're not from around here, they've moved in, they have no respect for anybody,” said Dysart Cemetery Association President Belva Barthelmes.
KCRG.com spoke with a funeral director in town who says the cheapest repair for the newer headstones will cost around $2,300. If families want to replace the older stones, some in the cemetery have been there for more than a hundred years, that’ll cost between $4,000-$6,000. But the Dysart Cemetery Association hopes to raise the money to pay for the repairs so families won't have to. The cemetery staff says the vandals also stole items from the graves along with damaging them. Now, those involved could face vandalism and theft charges.
