IOWA CITY, Iowa - A driver escaped uninjured after driving his car into the overflowing Iowa River late Friday night. According to police, the man was driving east on Highway 6 when he lost control and went into the rising river.
Iowa City police sergeant Chris Akers said the driver was shaken up after the incident but unharmed. It's not clear why he drove into the river and alcohol does not appear to be a factor, police said.
The driver climbed out of the car and called 911. His car remained in the river and was not visible late Friday night.
Police are working with the Department of Natural Resources to figure out how to remove the vehicle from the water. With the water rising and moving quickly, it could be difficult to locate and remove the car, according to authorities.
