CEDAR RAPIDS - Animal rescue workers say there's a certain attraction to the "flood cats."
Since the waters hit, more than 500 animals have made their way to the shelter in Cedar Rapids at the Kirkwood Community College campus.
Saturday the animal shelter hosted its first adoption day, and the adopters, like Karen Bachman, did not disappoint.
"I'll have to look on the other side, but there's an orange one back there that looks pretty good," said Bachman.
A lot of the cats and kittens here must have looked pretty good.
Of the 108 up for adoption, at least 60 found new homes.
This is one of the few that didn't leave the shelter. He was still under precautionary vet watch, but workers think he'll leave soon enough. He's sure vocal, so much so workers he dubbed him Ted Nugent, after the famous rock singer.
"Certainly these cats, their plight has been on the news for quite a while. What are we going to do, where are we going to go? I think people really looked at this and said, 'We're going to help, we're going to select an animal that we can take care of for the long term," said SGT Kent Choate, CRPD Animal Control.
That's exactly what brought in Bachman and her husband.
"Our animals have all been rescue animals of some sort through the shelters and things, so this was just another opportunity," said Bachman.
For all those dog lovers, the stray or abandoned dogs at the shelter won't go up for adoption anytime soon.
Workers say many of the dogs at the shelter have owners. But, they're hoping the owners either claim the dogs or dis-own them by July 10th.
After that, the shelter will consider an adoption day for dogs.
