IC Animal Shelter Needs New Home

IOWA CITY - The Iowa City animal shelter had to move because of flooding. Now it has to move again, but finding a second temporary home in a month is proving difficult. The shelter is asking anyone with space for some help.

At the Iowa City Animal Care Center's make shift home some of the dogs are getting a little restless. So is the shelter staff. Animal Care Director Misha Goodman said, “We have to be out by the 15th."

In less than 2 weeks the shelter will be kicked out of the Johnson County Fairgrounds. The space is needed for the county fair. Goodman said, "The timing is getting short and we're having a hard time finding an appropriate building."

The shelter is asking for anyone with some space, perhaps a barn, to call. So is Ralph Irvin. The shelter rescued his six cats from his flooded home. He is hoping someone else can save the shelter. The 85-year-old visits his cats every day. Boots, for example, is more than just a pet. Irvin said, "Well, they're my family. My non-human family at least. And I live alone."

It might be a month before Irvin can get back to his Johnson County home. The shelter needs a new home in half that time. Both are looking for one more case of Iowa kindness to rescue them.
