PTA News Release

By Danielle Plogmann

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – July 25, 2008 – In response to the Flood of 2008, Businesses, Organizations and Individuals are coming together to host a Back to School Rally. The Rally is to ensure that the 1,400 displaced Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) families, and those that are in need (estimated at approximately 700), are prepared for the 2008-2009 school year.

“The first day of school is quickly approaching, and one goal of this event is to assist in alleviating parents worry as they begin preparations for the school year. It’s our hope that this Rally will give them the opportunity to enjoy family time, as well as provide them with school supplies and information,” said Denise Bridges, Back to School Rally Supply Coordinator.

While all CRCSD students are invited to the Back to School Rally, Saturday, August 9, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field (Veterans Memorial Stadium), 950 Rockford SW, Cedar Rapids, those that have been impacted by the flood or are in need are especially encouraged to attend.

In addition to school supplies being distributed, on a first come-first serve basis, the day will include school and resource information, Inflatable activities, carnival games, face painting, entertainment, Kernels autograph signing and more. Thank you to our sponsors and partners: Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids Kernels, Cedar Memorial, Staples, Teamsters, Hawkeye Labor Council, Cedar Rapids Community School Foundation, ASAC, Cedar Rapids City PTA Council, Diversity Focus, Homeless Children’s Trust, HACAP, Hy-Vee, Back-to-School-Rally Committee, and Children of Promise/Youth Leadership.
