More Than 600 Pets Still Without Homes in Cedar Rapids

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR RAPIDS - More than 600 pets are still without homes in Cedar Rapids after the flood.

The city's animal control is temporarily located at Kirkwood Community College.

The animal control building itself had seven feet of water inside during the flood. And the city is now thinking twice about keeping that facility in the flood plain.

Most of the animals now at Kirkwood do have owners. The others are strays that need homes.

"We hope to have a few more adoption days down the road to make more animals available, but right now we don't have the resources, and we haven't identified animals up for adoption," said Sgt. Kent Choate, Cedar Rapids Animal Control.

There will be a cat adoption day this Saturday from ten to four at Kirkwood's Tippee Beef Building.
