CEDAR RAPIDS - The Salvation Army put some empty warehouse space to good use on Monday.

The former Econofoods site at 51st Northeast in Cedar Rapids is now the main distribution point for the army's flood relief efforts. The center will be open from 9 in the morning until 6 in the evening everyday until further notice.

The Salvation Army started looking for a temporary distribution site several weeks ago. The problem was they wanted the temporary warehouse space for free. But following a TV9 story on June 17th, the Nash Finch company offered the use of the site at no cost through July.

Grocery carts haven't run up and down the aisles inside the old Econofoods store since the company shut it down three years ago. But flood weary shoppers could come in, grab a cart and pick up what they needed. Some of the assistance available includes food boxes, cleaning kits, personal care items, drinking water, as well as emotional support.

Victims must show a photo I-D, be registered with FEMA and be able to provide their FEMA registration number to receive assistance.
