Aid to Women Relocates to Cedar Hills Community Church

CEDAR RAPIDS - Flood waters destroyed much of the building that houses the Cedar Rapids Aid to Women organization. But now the group is up and running in a new location, and it's already helping people again.

The water ruined just about everything on the first floor of the building at Aid to Women. Agency leaders weren't sure what they were going to do. Then, the Cedar Hills Community Church stepped in to help.

One of the worst disasters in Iowa history couldn't stop Aid to Women from carrying out its mission.

"The good feeling is to know that we are still doing what we've been called to do...helping women, children and a few men," said Linda Drzycimski, Aid to Women.

Flood waters washed away all of the organization's supplies. In a matter of days, people donated piles of clothes and enough food to feed dozens of people.

"People are just amazed that many people would care from the community and donate things for them," said Amy DeLay, Aid to Women.

Anyone can visit the church and take as much clothing and food as they need. Many visitors are also looking for comfort. Staff members listen to flood victims' concerns and try to do whatever they can to lift people's spirits.

"There really just aren't words to say, but we have been amazed by the strength the men and women have had," said DeLay.

Aid to Women volunteers may have lost their original building, but they're working harder than ever to help people through this crisis.

Aid to Women is in the process of getting all the classes it offers back on track, too. The Cedar Hills Community Church is also helping a variety of other groups and people get through this difficult time.
