CEDAR RAPIDS - "I don't need any clothes, I don't have a closet." With statements like this the brave people of Cedar Rapids continue to face the disaster that befell them with humor and what once was called true grit. As you drive through the city the mounds of family furniture and broken treasures astound the onlooker. Huge trucks pick up piles and piles but more remain.
Yet the truth of this statement is clear. Some items are needed now, some will be needed later. Many kind people with big hearts are looking for a way to assist the needy of Cedar Rapids and other Iowa cities effected by the flood. Captain Haslett of the local Salvation Army was asked what was needed most. "Often that changes from day to day," he said. "Masks one day, Rubber boots another, and perhaps soft drinks and underwear the next. Donations of cash, of course, allow us to be flexible."
When asked for a list of items needed now he gave us the following list:
Nonperishable Food Items
Disposable Kitchenware
Cleaning supplies
Paper products
Health supplies
Batteries
Any Size Re-sealable Storage Bags
Diapers/Wipes
Storage Totes/Laundry Baskets
Fans & Dehumidifiers
Socks, Underwear – All Sizes
Adult Work Boots
What items are not needed yet?
Clothing
Furniture
Appliances
Household Goods
