Prairie Shelter Still in Need of Food and Cleaning Supplies

CEDAR RAPIDS - Donations of clothes, food and cleaning supplies continue to pour into the Cedar Rapids area. The College Community School District has collected so much already they're actually being a little more selective about what they take.

The College Community Shelter has plenty of clothes. Right now, all they need is more food and cleaning supplies.

Prairie High School's auditorium lobby looks more like a department store than a school building. Piles of clothes, food and essentials fill every corner. The sight of all this overwhelms flood victims.

"I think it's beautiful there are so many people that have donated a lot of things to help others," said Eva Murray, flood victim.

"We've heard stories of hope. We've heard stories of despair. We've seen people that are very frustrated. People that are grateful," said Kathy Waychoff, volunteer coordinator.

Hundreds have come here for help, but now the service seems to have trickled off.

"We don't know if there's more options for them to get supplies and get what they need. If they do, that's great," said Waychoff.

The College Community School district created this place. No one really has any experience in disaster relief and planned school projects were put on hold.

"Those of us that work for the school district haven't really been able to do that and so we're kind of hoping there's going to be a next phase for this plan," said Waychoff.

A next phase that might involve a larger, more permanent place to put all these donations. The stress and strain of the flooding is starting to wear on everyone. Yet, people still try to remain upbeat.

"Everything happens for a reason. It'll get better," said Murray.

Even though the flooding is over, the need for supplies and materials is growing.

There's also still a need for volunteers. It seems to fluctuate though. Sometimes, lots of people come through the site needing supplies, other times it's quiet and the center doesn't need as much help.
