Some Renters Eligible for Assistance

By Cassie Huisman

DES MOINES — Some renters in Iowa who suffered damage to their residences during the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding beginning May 25 and continuing believe they are not eligible for rental assistance. That is not true.
Grants to rent a new place to live may be available for renters whose primary residence requires repairs to make it habitable. Eligible renters may be awarded one or two months of assistance depending on circumstances.
In addition, renters may apply for a U. S. Small Business Administration loan for up to $40,000 for personal property losses. If they don’t qualify for an SBA loan, other needs assistance may be available for such disaster-related costs as medical-dental expenses, clothing, a damaged vehicle or moving and storage expenses.
To register or get more information, contact FEMA at 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired between 8 a.m.and 6 p.m. local time seven days a week, or go to the FEMA website anytime at www.fema.gov.
