Couple Copes with Loss

Many families across Eastern Iowa are wondering how they are going to rebuild after this year's floods.

Specialist Adam Gorsh stands and looks at his new house in Palo. Most of it is piled up in his front yard though.

"Everything was rolling perfect, we got two good vehicles, got my dog, got a good wife, just bought a big house,” Specialsit Gorsh says.

Gorsh returned to Iowa last fall after serving with the National Guard's 133rd.

He and his wife September bought the home in June. They were making repairs when the water rose and Palo evacuated.

The couple then went to save their belongings from their Czech Village home in Cedar Rapids.

It wasn't long before water pushed them out of that home too.

"About 2-3 in the morning cops came knocking on the door telling us we have 5 minutes to get out,” September recalls.

The couple lost nearly everything, but what makes this situation even harder for the Gorsh family is they say they don't qualify to receive assistance from FEMA to help rebuild their home in Palo and they're unsure if they'll get assistance to help replace all the items they lost at their home in the Czeck Village.

Right now the Gorsh's are staying with family in Cedar Rapids but the feeling of helplessness is weighing heavy on this young couple.

"Sometimes I wish I was back in Iraq, Over there everything, seemed alright here at home,” Specialist Gorsh admits.

Still, the couple is staying strong. They know they still have what’s most important.

"I just told her we got each other, that’s all we got right now, we got our dogs and we got each other," Specialist Gorsh adds.
