Summer Classes Resume at University of Iowa After Flood

By Becky Ogann

IOWA CITY (AP) - More than 10,000 students are expected back at the University of Iowa on Monday after a one-week interruption in summer classes because of record flooding on the Iowa River.

It won't be a return to normal. Twenty buildings were flooded and classes have been moved to new locations. Parking is a mess. Utilities are operating in crisis mode, which means some buildings will be warm because the cooling system isn't at full capacity, while others may be too cold.

Interim Provost Lola Lopes says people should be prepared because comfort levels may be uncomfortable. She also says parking and traffic will be "terrible," so people should make every effort not to drive on campus unless there's no alternative.
