CEDAR RAPIDS -- The city of Cedar Rapids may have to knock down as many as three-hundred properties that got damaged by the floodwaters.

The demolition will begin sometime in the next couple weeks. One couple that lives in a house scheduled to be destroyed is still trying to cope with what’s about to happen.

The place that used to bring Sue and Roger Jensen joy now causes them to cringe.

819 G. Avenue Northwest is one of the homes the city plans to demolish. Floodwaters caused part of the foundation to collapse. Inspectors say it's unsafe to enter.

"It's kind of like you dumped your life on the ground and you walked away and you came back and it's like you expect to find something and nothing's there,” Roger Jensen said.

When the water was at its highest point, it was three feet deep on the first floor of the home.

"I lay in bed at night and I think, 'Oh, I get this is gone. That is gone,’” Sue Jensen said.

The Jensens have rented their house from Jody Bursovsky for the past year and a half. Bursovsky and her husband recently remodeled everything inside. Even though she didn't live here, she still feels devastated.

"I guess it's part of us. We've done a lot of work here and spent a lot of time here,” Bursovsky said.

Sue and Roger have moved into an apartment, but they miss their house.

"When you walked into our home, people that knew us knew it was our house. They could tell by the furnishings. They could tell by the smell. They could tell by the decorations,” Roger Jensen said.

Even though thick slime and mud coats everything inside now, the couple refuses to give up. The Jensens believe the place that's caused them so much heartache will eventually comfort them again.

The city will re-inspect all of the homes scheduled to be demolished over the next few weeks. In certain cases, some properties could get taken off the demolition list.
