CEDAR RAPIDS - All that flood debris that's piling up in Cedar Rapids neighborhoods has to go somewhere.

And the Linn County Solid Waste Agency says it could add up to about two years worth of trash going into the landfills. The amount could climb as crews continue to evaluate the situation.

Piles of trash still line most of the flooded areas in Cedar Rapids. The waste agency estimates there's enough garbage in town to fill four football fields. Crews are working twelve hour shifts to clear it all away, but no one's really sure how long it will take.

The city is using special equipment to smash and pick up all the trash. Then, the debris heads to the County Home Road landfill or the location in Cedar Rapids. Officials had to re-open the Cedar Rapids landfill because there's simply too much garbage and it won't all fit at the Marion location.

If the trash continues to pile up at this rate, the Solid Waste agency reports there's even a possibility that both landfills might reach their maximum capacity.

"We are working to reduce the waste streams, separating materials and potentially grinding, there is also the potential to separate metal and those kinds of items," said Karmin McShane, Linn County Solid Waste Agency.

The landfill has asked people to separate out hazardous materials from the debris. Officials told TV9 they're doing everything they can to stay safe.
