15 Pigs Stranded on Oakville Levy Saved

By Becky Ogann

OAKVILLE (AP) - Fifteen pigs stranded on a levee near Oakville by flooding are on their way to a farm sanctuary in New York.

About two dozen volunteers from four animal welfare agencies have been working since Friday to reach the pigs, which are dehydrated, hungry, exhausted, and badly sunburned.

State officials say about 50 live pigs were spotted on the levee along the Iowa River during a flyover last week. A few pigs were in bad condition and had to be euthanized.

The volunteers say the rescue will continue over the next several days.

The rescued pigs are being turned over to Watkins Glen, N.Y.-based Farm Sanctuary, where the group says they will be cared for by staff and supporters of the sanctuary.
