CR Begins Buyout List of Flood-Damaged Homes

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - City leaders in Cedar Rapids have started work on a list of homeowners who might be willing to sell their flood-damaged properties.

About 400 people attended a meeting on Monday where city officials explained the buyout process.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Pratt says homeowners don't commit the city or themselves to anything right now. She says people can add their names later or withdraw them until it's time for the city to buy the property -a process that could take two years.

Pratt says Cedar Rapids has no guarantee of getting any money from the federal or state government for buyouts. She says the city could need $86 million to buy out flood-damaged homes in its 100-year flood plain.
