CEDAR RAPIDS - The dollar damage total keeps growing, but Cedar Rapids public buildings damaged in the June flooding are at least cleaned and ready to repair.
City leaders got a status report from a company surveying the flood damage and guiding the search for recovery funding. And the latest damage total for public property is an eye popping $569 million.
The damage list includes 310 city facilities impacted in some way by the flooding (
full list). At the top of the list, you'd have to put City Hall and some of the large city-owned buildings. But the lengthy list also includes things like park pavilions and much less costly property.
The consultant says everything on that list is now cleaned, sanitized and stable. Stable means no further damage is happening. But it also doesn't mean the buildings are ready to reuse.
"To your question of whether or not these buildings are ready to be reoccupied, the answer is no, buildings lost all of their mechanical systems and electrical systems and until the experts come in a tell us otherwise the buildings will remain closed," said John Levy, Glove Midwest Risk Management.
Some of the largest buildings, like City Hall, still require outside heat and humidity controls to prevent bacteria and mold from growing.
Just a few buildings, like the Public Works Building on 6th Street SW, have opened upper floors to city workers while repairs are going on on the ground floors.
