Could be Curtain Call for Second Act Thrift Store

By Shannon Hogan, Reporter

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR RAPIDS - A 40-year-old business is cleaning out after flood waters ruined almost everything inside Second Act thrift store.

Clothes and furniture line the curb and empty racks stand in the Cedar Rapids parking lot.

The owner hasn't even seen the store yet- but her family is doing what it can to clean up. People bring in their items for Second Act to sell- and so far no one has complained about losing money.

"Some people had a lot of merchandise here, none of them have said hey where's my merchandise they've all said can we help...is there a way we can help?" said Vern Wilkinson, Second Act.

Second Act says this flood is too much for the business to overcome- they say they likely won't re-open.

This is devastating... even though I don't live in CR anymore, every time I come home, I try to swing by the Second Act to see Carol and see what bargains I can get. I remember going there with my grandma when I was little, then as I got older, I would schedule appts. for the afternoons of March 1st and Aug. 1st just so that I could be at the re-openings!!

This store was a place that allowed people with limited money to dress better, and feel better about themselves. The staff contributed this with their cheerful assistance. It will be missed.

This flood has hit many small businesses, and our town will really miss this store. Great prices, great staff! great stuff!

The Second Act has always been one of our favorite stores. Carol is a great business-woman who cares about her customers, and always knew every person by name. We hope she is able to rebuild her business.

My heart goes out to Carol and the rest of her family and employees.  I was a regular shopper at Second Act and worked across the street at R&B Painting for 3 years.  Sad to see the neighborhood go.

I manage a Goodwill Thrift store here in Arizona. I just want to send our thoughts and hearts out to your community and the Second Act Store. Wow, 40 years is quite awhile to be in business and then to have to let go must be very hard. One of our supervisors is from Cedar Rapids and is there now with her family. She'll be returning to the Phoenix area early next week. So from this very dry desert (115 degrees today), to the very wet city of Cedar Rapids, we wish you a full and speedy recovery

....Okay, now after I have been helping people clean out homes with flood damage, I am willing to donate what I don't use or need. No words can describe what people are going through....God Bless Everyone.

I'm afraid after all of this is over there are going to be a lot of small shops that will go under. It's too big of a loss for them to get over.

This was my favorite store in town! I always got the most beautiful clothes for unbelievable prices. If they don't reopen it will be a huge loss to all of us who shopped there first. Their whole family is in my prayers.

This is so sad to hear. I hadn't been in there in quite a while, but I'll always have those few memories of the place to look back on!
