Water in Olin Recedes... Slowly

By Katie Wiedeman

Jon Kreger put up a tough fight against with the Wapsi River. Unfortunately, he lost. "We thought we was gonna win, but we didn't (ha ha)."

Water burst through his sand-bag walls, filling up his house. Now his first look at his flood soaked home is worse then he imagined. When asked "What's the worst damaged thing in your home?.” Kreger replied, “The appliances, it looks like maybe our foundation is sinking a little bit."

The spot where people were loading boats to visit their homes on Friday is now dry. The water has receded but the people of Olin are still not out of the water. Resident Ben Vernon said, "There is not much you can do right now just wait for the water to go down and start cleaning stuff up."

A lot of homes are still surrounded with water and the dryer homes are still without water or electricity. All the food in Kreger's fridge is spoiled. The waiting, the water is wearing on the weary. "Yeah it's difficult pretty much everyone on the street is gone," says Kreger. There's still a glimpse of humor on this quiet corner of this recovering town, they say they have to laugh, or they'll cry.
