Sandbags Coming Down in Iowa City, Coralville

IOWA CITY (AP) - The landscape in Iowa City and Coralville will soon be changing.

City leaders say it's finally safe to remove the millions of sandbags piled up along the riverfront since last month's flooding that devastated the area.

Nearly 4 million sandbags were put in place in Iowa City, Coralville, Cedar Rapids and on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City.

Officials said Monday they have either started removing sandbags or are hoping to do so soon.

Cedar Rapids officials say most of sandbags in place at the peak of their flood have already been removed. In Iowa City, officials decided to wait until they reached a flood risk that's normal for this time of year.

The University of Iowa will leave its sandbags in place at least through the end of the month.
