Rundown of Aid Provided to Flood Victims

FEMA: Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) is the primary agency that deals with disaster assistance. Two different types of assistance are offered:
- FEMA provides temporary housing, repair and replacement of homes.
- FEMA provides other assistance including medical and clothing.

The deadline to apply for FEMA disaster assistance in July 28th 2008.

USDA Agricultural Aid: Farm Service Agency may make emergency loans to farmers and ranchers who were operating a farm or ranch at the time of the disaster.

Housing and Urban Development: Offers foreclosure relief, loan guarantee assistance and makes insurance available for mortgages and home rehabilitation.

Crisis Counseling: Provides assistance for short-term crisis counseling.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance: Provides unemployment benefits and re-employment services to individuals who have become unemployed because of major disasters.

Financial Services: Some banks permit early withdraws of time deposits without penalty. Contact your local financial institution to determine eligibility.

Legal Services: FEMA provides free legal assistance to disaster victims

Special Tax Considerations: You may be able to deduct a casualty loss on your federal income tax return. You should save all food, travel and lodging receipts to ensure your tax deduction. Contact the IRS for more information.

Small Business Administration Disaster Loans: Offers federally subsidized, low-interest loans for homeowners and renters to repair or replace homes, personal property or businesses
