Flood Recovery Assistance Information for Bremer County

All residents impacted by recent flooding – city and rural – are encouraged to visit the Disaster Recovery Center located at the Waverly-Shell Rock School “Commons” area. The address is 1405 4th Avenue SW. The following services/referrals are available:

FEMA – All impacted by the recent flood should register for possible assistance for flood-related expenses. Even if you have already called FEMA, you should stop at the center to check the status of your report and assure it is complete. An incomplete report can delay assistance by several weeks or result in an “Assistance Denied” letter.

Food Assistance – This is a 10-day program that began today and will end June 29. Qualifying individuals may receive a debit card to be used to replace food lost due to any storm/flood-related cause.

Department of Employment – Assists those who employment was affected due to the disaster.

IRS – Have programs available to replace tax records lost to flood. They also have information explaining how to take catastrophic losses off of taxes. The program allows impacted persons/businesses to amend last year’s taxes or include the damage costs in this year’s taxes for a possible refund.

Small Business Administration (SBA) – Provide very low interest loans to qualifying impacted businesses and individuals.

USDA – Information available regarding housing referrals and low interest loans for housing needs.

Legal Services – Address legal issues associated with this flood event.

Department of Aging – Program available to assist persons over age 60 with replacement of personal health needs (hearing aids, glasses, medications) lost in flood.

Crisis Counseling – Assistance for those who are struggling with the many aspects of a flood event.

Iowa State Insurance Commission – Assist those with storm-related insurance issues.

Hazard Mitigation – Will discuss flood insurance and how to safely clean damaged property. They will also provide advice in how to minimize the effects of future floods.

Disaster Recovery Center Hours: 8:00AM – 7:00PM seven days a week until further notice.
