Health Problems Linked to Floods

By Becky Ogann

WATERLOO (AP) - Medical officials at one Waterloo hospital say they're seeing an increase in skin infections and respiratory illnesses linked to last month's record flooding.

Dr. Todd Lawrence of Covenant Medical Center says the skin infections usually cause an abscess that can be treated easily with antibiotics.

Lawrence says the infection looks like a large pimple. He says a person should see a doctor if it gets red and swollen or appears to spread.

Lawrence also says most of the patients suffering from respiratory problems have been exposed over long periods of time to chemicals used to clean flood-damaged homes.
