Cedar Rapids Takes Big Step, Offers Buyouts
CEDAR RAPIDS - The City of Five Seasons took a big step in flood recovery when it started sending buyout offers to dozens of flood victims this week.
Cedar Rapids mailed 55 letters to people in the proposed greenspace. That's where FEMA will buy land for future flood protection. Some flood victims say they're confused by the letters and don't understand the dollar amounts on the offers.
The city says the numbers on the sheets aren't final since they do not factor in some federal and state programs.
"They have to go through the duplication of benefits check. That's it. They have to sign it and go through the process," Greg Eyerly said.
Property owners have until December 18th to sign the paperwork and agree to sell.
Already six owners have accepted the offers. And ten others have decided to not sell their properties.
