CEDAR RAPIDS -- The recent flooding has forced a lot of people to change their priorities.
All the destruction caused one local couple to realize how badly they wanted to be together.
Tiffany Remington always dreamed of a storybook wedding with her childhood crush Charles Easterday.
As the couple prepared to spend the rest of their lives together, they felt the typical wedding day jitters.
"I’m very nervous, very very nervous,” Remington said.
Easterday said, "It's hot in here. I don't know if it's the nerves picking up or just the heat, but we'll get through it."
Tiffany and Charles have been under a lot of stress recently that has nothing to do with getting married. The flood destroyed their home. They've been living at a shelter for two weeks.
Four days ago, they decided to tie the knot at the Prairie High School shelter where they had been staying.
"Besides the church. I have everything. I have great people. It's wonderful,” Remington said.
The couple originally planned to walk down the aisle about a year from now.
"When you have bad things happen, you want to have the turnaround of a good thing. This is a good thing,” Easterday said.
Volunteers and local businesses donated just about everything at the ceremony.
"As we started telling the story, people started donating things and offering their services,” volunteer Lori Pike said.
Friends and family smiled as the future Mr. and Mrs. Easterday vowed to support each other through good times and bad.
The non-traditional wedding ended with a quick cutting of the cake followed up by a heartfelt champagne toast.
"I've never met people that would do something like that for anybody,” Remington said.
You might not call it a storybook wedding, but the newlyweds definitely have a story to tell for years to come.
The couple recently found a new place to live. They have something else to look forward to as well.
They're expecting a baby.
