Ron Paul addresses supporters during the Campaign for Liberty at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 2, 2008. Ron Paul Returns
MINNEAPOLIS -- As Republicans celebrated their first full convention night Tuesday, the Ron Paul Revolution received another breath of life in Minneapolis where thousands turned out for their own convention featuring the fourteen-term Texas Congressman so many Libertarians love and so many Republicans wish would just go away.
Converging on the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, Paul supporters turned out in droves to see their hero take the stage the same night as President Bush took the digital stage to address Republican convention via satellite from Washington. True to their orgininalist interpretation of American government, many turned out wearing colonial style hats and other 17th century attire, including one Daniel Boone boasting a deer skin suit and coonskin cap. Dubbed the Campaigned for Liberty, the gathering featured speakers such as anti-tax guru Grover Norquist, former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and Barry Goldwater Jr.. The event was featured live streaming on the campaign's website. Paul used the occasion to relish in a movement that he described as something that he himself still had a hard time believing so many people felt passionately about. "The revolution is alive and well," said Paul as he looked into the cheering crowd. Taking the offensive against the economic, foreign and domestic policies pursued by both parties in the last century, Paul warned supporters against the new precedent of preventative war set by the Bush Administration and i's disregard of the constitution; the follies and double standards of the war on drugs; and the dangerous path of false economic prosperity so many have been led to believe in. Paul blamed both parties for what he called "rubber stamping foreign policy resolutions," specifically those designed to intervene in the affairs of other nations, saying that the warrior spirit of ancient times was alive and well, but now the government had become the plunderer and looter. Paul also rallied against the economics of US prosperity, calling the modern American standard of living an "illusion" propped up by the Federal Reserve through rampant borrowing, the printing of paper money and rising inflation. Arguing that nothing in the constitution gave the government the authority to create a central bank, Paul said he was pleasantly surprised to realize people were well aware of the nations dubious economic policies. "I didn't even know until now that anyone knew or cared about the Federal Reserve," said Paul. Encouraging supporters to continue the struggle, Paul pushed non-violent methods like civil disobedience, invoking the changes brought by Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi. "Two years ago i had no idea what it would lead too, but I firmly believe that our day is coming," Paul told the cheering crowd. Telling his followers never to feel ashamed by their beliefs, Paul said that "crazy ideas" like balanced budgets and personal privacy were not yet popular in mainstream circles. "The strongest motivation in the world is to take care of ourselves. We shouldn't be embarrassed by that." More Good Stuff |
