Ron Paul Set to Honor Tea Party
Once again honoring the revolutions of history, Texas Congressman Ron Paul will commemorate the Boston Tea Party Sunday, with his campaign attempting to set another one day fund raising record and beat out the $4.4 million he collected from supporters last month on November 5th, Guy Fawkes Day.
The campaign's new blimp also took to the air Friday, leaving North Carolina on its maiden voyage up the east coast. The blimp was originally scheduled to drop tea into Boston harbor on Sunday, but a launch delay forced organizers to reschedule the flight plan for a New Hampshire primary appearance on January 8th. Despite a low standing in national polls, Paul’s extensive grassroots campaign may yet give credence to the fact that early polls are merely snapshots of the race. Given Paul’s media attention and die hard supporters, there is little doubt Sunday’s event will eclipse November's record. But can Paul bring in enough Republicans for a bid at the nomination? Current support has leaned heavily on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who recently took a commanding lead in Iowa, and as a former Baptist minister, has proven adept at courting the party's evangelicals. But for Paul and others, Iowa will not be the end all. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is high in the national polls, but not in Iowa, where he has never planned on securing a victory. His big ticket rides on the larger states and later primaries. Paul has seen stronger media attention lately and with his commitments to a completely new monetary policy and immediate withdrawal from Iraq, the real contest will come down to whether people believe Paul, or candidates like Giuliani when it comes to foreign policy and fiscal management.
