Ron Paul Blimp Will Fly

Supporters for Texas Congressman Ron Paul have taken a humorous suggestion by a blogger and turned it into a flying humorous suggestion by a blogger.

Organizers for the Ron Paul blimp officially announced its launch date Friday, with lift off scheduled for December 11th in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, followed by an east coast tour that will include a stop in Boston on December 16th to commemorate the Boston Tea Party.

The first of its kind for a presidential campaign, the blimp is one of the largest airships in the world and measures 197 feet long and carries a crew of between 15 and 20 plus 2 pilots.

Organized by Liberty Political Advertising--the company reportedly has no official ties to Paul’s campaign-- but rather seeks to use an innovating for-profit funding structure to raise money.

But the new potential for avoiding political advertising regulations by setting up profitable ad companies will certainly shake up the system.

As a for-profit limited liability company, the group can sell ad time on the blimp much like a billboard and the project is entirely funded by private campaign donations.

Perhaps just a nod to Paul’s libertarian philosophy, Liberty Political Advertising, technically a broker for advertising time, effectively avoids the regulations that required donor reports and donations caps through entities like political action committees.

According to the group’s website, it does not solicit funds for Paul’s campaign or any political party and they have retained the services of former FEC official Bradley Smith as outside counsel.

Smith has also provided legal advising services for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
