Giuliani Says No To "Fair Tax"
Stumping in North Carolina Monday, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani voiced his opposition to eliminating the current income tax in favor of a broad-based consumer tax.
The so-called, “Fair Tax” being pushed by rivals former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, would purportedly remain equal to federal revenue and eliminate the Internal Revenue Service Giuliani pointed to the wounded housing market and tax deductions like the home mortgage deduction. “The home mortgage deduction is considered by many critical to the ability of people to buy a home and keep their home,” Giuliani told supporters. Giuliani did call for simplifying the tax code so people could file their returns one sheet of paper. Pushing his fiscal record to conservatives, Giuliani has also been given the seal of approval by Grover Norquist, the powerful head of Americans for Tax Reform. Giuliani pledged not to raise taxes at the GOP YouTube debate last week and has received praise from the influential anti-tax advocate. “You are the most successful tax cutter in modern New York history, and, on balance, the most successful tax cutter in the Republican field today,” wrote Norquist of Giuliani in a letter Tuesday. Social conservatives remain distrustful of Giuliani given his past positions on gay rights and abortion, but Giuliani hopes that those same conservatives can overlook that social record and be wooed by the wallet.
