DES MOINES (AP) - Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats has announced that he has formed a committee to begin exploring a run for the Republican nomination for Iowa governor.

Vander Plaats says it is his intent to run and that a formal announcement of his candidacy would come next summer.

It would be his third bid for the GOP nomination.

Vander Plaats sought the nomination in 2002, losing to eventual nominee Doug Gross. He ran again in 2006, but dropped out to become the running mate of eventual nominee Jim Nussle.

Vander Plaats is the second Republican to express interest in challenging Democratic Gov. Chet Culver in 2010.

Last week, Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey expressed interest in seeking the GOP nomination.
