DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa officials have given their OK to build a new school in Blairsburg.

The School Budget Review Committee voted Monday to spend statewide sales tax money on the new school, despite shrinking enrollment.

School districts with fewer than 250 students must now ask the state's permission to build schools after the local option sales tax was replaced with a statewide penny sales tax last July.

The Northeast Hamilton school district planned to borrow $2.5 million and spend $700,000 from the local option sale tax for a new elementary school. But then the state shifted to the statewide tax in July, forcing the northern Iowa district to seek state approval.
