DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa lawmakers face one of the most expensive problems in state history when they convene this month -- flood recovery.

No one is sure of the price tag, but it's enormous. And it comes at a time of state budget crisis and the crumbling national economy.

Officials estimate the total damage from the summer flooding and tornadoes at $8 billion to $10 billion. The worst of it was in Cedar Rapids.

Rep. Tyler Olson, a Cedar Rapids Democrat, says lawmakers must address two categories of legislation -- those dealing with policy and those dealing with dollars.

The group overseeing flood recovery has advised looking beyond the immediate crisis and considering how flood damage can be repaired in ways that will benefit Iowa for decades.
