Culver Pushes to Increase School Drop-Out Age
DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver is vowing to renew his push to increase the age a student must remain in school.
Culver says an increasingly complex workplace makes it even more important to keep students in school. While a push to increase in compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18 has failed to gain approval in the Legislature in the past, lawmakers say that may change this time around. House Speaker Pat Murphy says raising the drop-out age to 18 could lower drop-out rates by 25 percent. Some critics say schools could face disruptions from students who are forced to stay in school. Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley says school officials say problems will worsen if students are required to stay in school until they're 18. More Good Stuff |
