DES MOINES (AP) - The chairman of the Iowa Republican Party says he won't seek another term, setting the stage for what could be a heated debate over the GOP's future after two disappointing elections.

Stewart Iverson confirmed Thursday that he wouldn't seek re-election to his post. He stepped in after Ray Hoffman resigned shortly after the 2006 election.

Iverson expressed optimism that Republicans will fare better in the 2010 elections but others say the party needs to examine its message and the mechanics of how it gets out the vote.

Veteran GOP activist Bob Haus says he thinks the party may be focusing too much on the priorities of social conservatives. He says that forces candidates to take stands that turn off moderates and independents.
