House, Senate Democrats Seek to Expand Majorities
DES MOINES (AP) - Democrats appeared to keep their majorities but failed to expand them in the Iowa House and Senate after taking control of both chambers in 2006.
Early unofficial results showed Democrats winning 20 races and leading in 28 races. Republicans won 19 and appeared to be leading in 27. Democrats were looking to build on a 53-47 majority in the House. Their goal was given a boost by the decision of 49 incumbents to seek re-election, leaving only four seats open. Republicans hoped to win a majority in the House, but had a difficult task as nine GOP incumbents opted not to seek re-election. House Minority Leader Christopher Rants, R-Sioux City, says there were too many absentee ballots outstanding to call many of the contested races at 11 p.m Tuesday night. More Good Stuff |
