Survey of Iowa Voters' Views

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama rode on strong support from women, young voters, independents and moderates to a victory in Iowa tonight, beating Republican John McCain.

Preliminary exit poll results from Iowa voters showed that those who felt the economy was not good or poor favored Obama. Those who believed the economy was in good shape supported McCain.

While the economy dominated the election, Obama relied on strong support from women, with nearly six of 10 supporting the Democrat from Illinois. Nearly seven of 10 voters between 18 and 19 supported Obama. Independents, which made up about one-third of voters, supported Obama by a nearly 2-1 ratio.

Voters who wanted change, about four of 10 voters, overwhelmingly supported Obama, as did voters who wanted a candidate who cared about them.
