Iowa Senate is Long Shot for GOP

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa Republicans say they know making a dent against the Democrats in the Senate is a long shot in this fall's election.

Democrats control the Senate by a 30-20 margin and six Republicans have decided not to seek re-election.

Senate Republican Leader Ron Wieck of Sioux City says Republicans know the odds are against them and are already looking ahead to 2010.

He says the goal this fall is to maintain the status quo.

Wieck says Republicans can build on steps Democrats have taken since they took control of the Legislature and the governor's office, including the indoor smoking ban and labor-based measures. He also says state spending has spiraled out of control.

In the House, where the Democrats hold a much smaller 53-47 edge, House Minority Leader Christopher Rants says he's confident Republicans will close the gap.

the gop leadership in Iowa is in complete shambles. they continually move left in hopes of making people happy while alienating conservatives.... good luck with that strategy. most of us conservatives have moved on to the libertarian party.

I find it interesting that people mock the Republican Party, then turn around and cry about the smoking ban. You are aware it was the Demoncrats who passed that legislation, right? If you vote Republican maybe you can protect the freedoms you have left. A vote for Defeatocrats is a vote for higher taxes, loss of freedoms, and forcing lower income people into state dependence. Lobo, if the Libertarians had better ideas for National Security, I'd be right there with you.

This is why were having so many problems in Iowa!! Same as with the federal government, too many Dems in control. It needs to be more balnced instead of one-sided votes all the time. Get ready to pay higher taxes and give up more freedoms. IT'S THE DEMOCRATIC WAY, more big government because people cannot take care of themselves and need the goverment to tell them what to do and how to behave! You can thank the democrats for the problems that we and our nation have, not Bush!
