DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa Republicans say they know making a dent against the Democrats in the Senate is a long shot in this fall's election.

Democrats control the Senate by a 30-20 margin and six Republicans have decided not to seek re-election.

Senate Republican Leader Ron Wieck of Sioux City says Republicans know the odds are against them and are already looking ahead to 2010.

He says the goal this fall is to maintain the status quo.

Wieck says Republicans can build on steps Democrats have taken since they took control of the Legislature and the governor's office, including the indoor smoking ban and labor-based measures. He also says state spending has spiraled out of control.

In the House, where the Democrats hold a much smaller 53-47 edge, House Minority Leader Christopher Rants says he's confident Republicans will close the gap.
