DES MOINES (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain stopped by the Iowa State Fair, where he repeated his opposition to ethanol subsidies and vowed to open markets around the world to Midwest commodities.

McCain says he believes in renewable fuels, but doesn't believe they should be subsidized.

During Friday's visit, McCain also focused on his effort to negotiate trade deals that will open foreign markets to farm commodities.

Democrats said McCain's opposition to ethanol subsidies will make it difficult for him to win in states like Iowa, one of the nation's top ethanol producers.

State Democratic Party Chairman Scott Brennan says McCain's position on ethanol and his opposition to the new farm bill shows he doesn't care about what's important in Iowa.
