JOHNSTON (AP) - The chairman of the Iowa Republican Party says spending by Democrats in the Legislature has left the state ill-prepared to respond to the state's record flooding.

Democrats reject the charge but GOP party head Stewart Iverson says the issue will come up in the fall campaigns.

Iverson and Iowa Democratic Chairman Scott Brennan were speaking Friday during taping of "Iowa Press" on public television.

Iverson says Democrats have increased spending by about 18 percent, leaving little for emergencies such as the state's flooding response.

Brennan counters that Democrats approved a balanced budget and that the bulk of flood relief will come from the federal government.
