Judge, Legislators Back Obama in Days Before Convention

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Seventeen Iowa officials have announced their support for presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The supporters include House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge.

The endorsements came Thursday -- two days before Democrats gather in each of Iowa's 99 counties for conventions. The conventions will include delegates elected at the January caucuses who will need to choose a candidate.

The race has been dramatically reshaped since the caucuses, when Obama won Iowa and John Edwards edged Hillary Rodham Clinton for second place.

With only Obama and Clinton remaining, the campaigns now are seeking activists who backed other candidates, particularly Edwards. About one-third of the 17 new Obama supporters formerly supported Edwards.
